Having weight loss surgery marks the start of a new chapter in your life. You will need to make significant changes to your diet and way of life, starting in the weeks leading up to the procedure. This timeline breaks down the entire process to give you an idea of what to expect.
4 Weeks Before Surgery
Consultations and surgery preparation
After an optional consultation with our dietologist, you will talk with our surgeon Dr Khaleal. The consultation will allow Dr Khaleal to understand what weight loss method suits your needs the best. During the consultation he will provide information on the procedures as well as answers to your questions.
Dr Khaleal and his team will also collect healthcare data about you, such as heart/lung status, blood pressure, weight, and BMI. After the consultation with Dr Khaleal, Dr Rawof will provide quality information on the lifestyle changes you will have to make after weight loss surgery.
We suggest you start exercising every day for 20 minutes and quit smoking prior to weight loss surgery.
The surgery typically takes about an hour
This will depend on the procedure that is recommended and on your health condition prior to surgery. Visit our section on our services to know more about the different procedures. After the procedure, drink plenty of water and try to move around and be back on your feet.
You will be assisted by the hospital staff in managing your mobilisation, as well as any pain and swelling that might occur.
Patients usually stay in the hospital for 1-3 days.
7-14 days After Surgery
First follow up appointment
It is crucial you attend your follow-up appointments to get the desired outcome from you weight loss surgery.
You will receive reminders form the practice before every appointment.
Your first follow-up appointment will be with Dr Khaleal. He will make sure that you are recovering well and that you are following the post-surgery diet guidelines. He will also be available to answer questions.

Continuous follow-up appointment
It’s important that you follow a healthy diet and exercise every day. You will also have follow-up appointments with our dietician, nurse, exercise physiologist, and Dr. Khaleal. We can also refer you to a trusted psychologist if you feel the need.
It’s important that you attend the follow-up appointments, as it is through this appointments that we make sure you are on the right track to maintain your weight loss.
Day Before Procedure
When and where to go
We perform surgery either at Nepean or at Holroyd private hospitals, in Sydney. You will receive reminders from us the day before surgery with practical information from us and the hospital. You will also be reminded about the steps after the surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.
1-3 days After Surgery
Before you go back home, we review your medication and vitamin supplements with you. We also walk you through our diet instructions, as well as our guide on tips and tricks. You can find the guide here.
We will also address any concerns around diet, vitamin supplements, or rehabilitation you might have.
You will be discharged from the hospital, and you will consume only clear liquids for the first days. You will then slowly start introducing pureed foods into your diet.
2-6 Weeks After Surgery
Return to work
At this stage, most patients are able to return to work. This is of course dependent on the type of job you have, as it might be necessary for you to recover longer if your work involves physical strain.
Your diet of pureed foods will slowly start including soft foods, such as baked fish, chicken and well cooked vegetables. If you are able to digest them properly, you might start introducing some solid foods as well.
