Surgical Procedures -
Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is a great tool to help you lose weight. The first bariatric surgery was performed in 1954, and it was referred to as “jejunoileal bypass”.

Over the years, several variations of this procedure were invented and perfected, arriving to the 3 most common procedures we have today: laparoscopic gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The gastric band was the most performed surgery in 2010, taking roughly 85% of the total procedures. Nowadays, it corresponds only to 1-2% of total procedures, with sleeve gastrectomies taking the lead in most performed surgery, at around 80-90% of total procedures performed. Gastric bypass is now mostly used for patients who are not suitable for sleeve gastrectomies.
